You’ve probably heard the story of Goldilocks and the porridge that was “just right”. Well that’s exactly what puzzles scientists and physicists most about the universe – the laws of physics are set “just right” to allow it, and life, to exist. By “just right” that means that if just one of the fundamental forces of nature (e.g. gravity) was off by just the tiniest fraction, nothing would exist. This is so extraordinary that the philosopher Antony Flew, a prominent atheist for most of his life, eventually changed his mind to believe in a supreme God, declaring that “we have to come to terms with the origins of the laws of nature… and the only viable explanation is the divine mind”.
